I lead technology for Guaranteed Health: an end-of-life care company focused on helping people die better. We provide higher quality, tech-enabled hospice care for those who need it most.

When I tell people what I do, I usually get one of two responses. The first plays out as, “oh that’s heavy.” Cue the discomfort, the absence of follow up questions, and the inevitable subject change. Thinking about death — what it means for our friends, family, and eventually ourselves — is daunting. It makes us uncomfortable, it makes us not want to ask follow up questions, it makes us change the subject.

Die How You Live

This is the motivating force behind Guaranteed. Behind the wall of discomfort is a lack of education about end-of-life care. Behind the conversations not being had are complicated, poorly represented, and often inaccessible systems of care. The calls for better healthcare grow louder and louder in this country, and end-of-life care should be no different. At Guaranteed, we believe that, like in all healthcare, everyone deserves dignity and empowerment in how they’re taken care of, in how they live, and (yes) in how they die.

This is also the motivating force behind my drive to support our mission. Death reminds us that only one thing in this life is Guaranteed: that it comes to an end. This inspires me. I have no time to waste in making the world better by giving people comfort, dignity, and empowerment when they need it most.

That brings me to people’s other response to my vocation: “I wish this existed sooner. Can I tell you my story?” Simply by challenging the norm that we don’t talk about death gives us a unique opportunity to share our experiences of loss, grief, and caregiving. Far more than just “heavy”, these conversations are about a universal human experience, and they always leave me feeling more empowered to create the best possible end-of-life care.

I’m grateful and proud to lead the technology team that will design and engineer a better experience of death and loss. If you have no time to waste and want to make an impact too, we are hiring.
